SKILLET have never been a band interested in sitting in the corner. Their music is built for the moment when life gets heavy, and it's the kind of rock that tells you to get back up, turn the volume higher and keep moving. "After the Storm" continues that tradition, delivering a heavier, more aggressive version of the sound that has made SKILLET one of modern hard rock's most recognizable names.
The opening track, "Scream", immediately sets the tone. Dark keys and clean guitar give way to thick distortion, pounding drums and a chorus that feels made for a packed arena. There's frustration all over the song, but it never becomes hopeless. That's an important quality with SKILLET. Even when the music sounds angry, there's usually something underneath it pushing toward the light. They're a faith-based band, and that shows.
"Lift Me Up" brings another standout moment, built around a chunky groove and a rhythm that you can't ignore. It's familiar SKILLET territory, but that's part of the appeal. The band knows exactly how to make this kind of song work, and there's something comforting about hearing them lean into it. There's also "Grave Stomper", one of the EP's loudest cuts. Gothic touches collide with detuned guitars and a heavy, stomping rhythm, giving the track a darker edge. It's aggressive without losing the theatrical quality that has always been part of SKILLET's identity.
The title track, "After the Storm", slows things down and lets the emotion come through. A heavier riff and rumbling percussion support a song about trying to find your footing after everything falls apart. "Come and Find Me" follows with an old-school feel, while "Heaven Help Us" closes the EP on a more personal note.
SKILLET aren't exactly reinventing themselves here. "After the Storm" doesn't represent some dramatic left turn, and longtime listeners will recognize lots of the band's familiar fingerprints. But frankly, that's not a bad thing. SKILLET have spent decades developing a sound people know and love, and they execute it really well. Not every band needs to chase the next trend or completely rebuild itself every few years.
"After the Storm" is heavy, melodic, emotional and unmistakably SKILLET. For longtime fans, it feels like a welcome return to some of the band's harder-edged instincts. For anyone who needs music that's heavy but faith-filled, this EP delivers exactly what SKILLET have always done best.
